The piece is titled after and inspired by a statement Donald Trump made regarding news anchor Megyn Kelly in 2016, while running for presidential office. The words in Trump’s statement perpetuate dated and oppressive views of women. This painting is a response to the impact words can have on our perceptions of others. The image of the female’s tongue tied in Shibari represents how sexual objectification silences the voices of women and perpetuates their oppression.

This painting is meant to focus on the eye-shaped pattern featured on the wings of an Emperor Moth. This distinctive characteristic has led cultures around the world to place symbolic meanings to this little creature, relating to vision, truth, and knowledge. I also focused on the wings, because of their function as a protective cloak, disguising the moth from predators.

This painting is a visual representation of the lifecycle of the Gulf Fritillary butterfly. In order for the caterpillar to transcend and be reborn into a butterfly, it must form a relationship with a single plant, eating and manipulating its leaves  for food and shelter. This painting speaks to the relationship between decay and rebirth as it relates to butterflies and all life on Earth.
